From the liner notes
of the 1998 CD, DAYDREAMS:
"DAYDREAMS reveals another
side of Ellen Hoffman. She is the whirlwind who whips a ragged
choir into shape for its big concert, dashes off a brilliant score
for the Oakland Symphony, inspires students at summer jazz camp
to pursue music, if not as a career, then - even more importantly
- to express aspects of their lives that can't be expressed any
other way. Yet for her debut album under her own name, Hoffman
shows the solo piano approach, with an occasional singer, "because
I do love accompanying singers." She is thoughtful and contemplative
as if time doesn't matter...Hoffman is not the first pianist to
strip away all but the essence of the tune - Bill Evans and Vince
Guaraldi, too, were masters of the quiet side of solo recording
- but her artistry and musical viewpoint are unique. The songs
are not fancy but all are buoyed by rich, full chords tied to
one exquisite melody after another. Every couple of songs, Hoffman
invites one of her favorite vocalists to sing, from bebop and
ballad-master Mark Murphy to Latin percussion great and bandleader
Pete Escovedo, not known as a singer, but here he sounds sweet,
sincere, and downright wonderful on the Christmas Song (to which
Hoffman adds a whimsical reference to Hanukkah)...DAYDREAMS is
Hoffman's first recorded statement of her musical vision. It comes
as a delightful surprise even to longtime fans: a recording that
is unexpectedly introspective elegantly personal. And pure Ellen
Hoffman."
